Painting Workshop with Maureen Jeram: August 7 - September 11

We are very excited to offer the Painting Workshop with internationally acclaimed painter Maureen Jeram. Maureen combines her training in Italian Renaissance painting with her studies under George Baselitz to give you an entirely fresh approach to traditional painting techniques.

Maureen Jeram finished her Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting at the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence Rhode Island in 1993, before moving to Italy to research Renaissance painting. In 1998, she received a Fulbright grant in Florence, Italy for a project on contemporary frescoes. She moved to Berlin in 2000 and studied with Georg Baselitz at the Universität der Kunst. Through the use of staging and found gestures, her painting focuses on revealing underlying tensions between figures and objects establishing a pictorial space where conflicting emotions begin to become tangible. Her paintings are exhibited in Berlin, Italy, USA and in the Netherlands. She lives and works in Berlin. Learn more about her work at her website: www.maureenjeram.com

Painting Workshop : August 7 - September 11

An introduction to the expressive and versatile medium of painting with a focus on traditional painting methods. Starting with basic color theory, learn how to mix colors and achieve a unified color world. Through exercises designed to show the difference between hue and value, or the relationship between complimentary colors, we sharpen our understanding of how colors interact and how to mix paint.  Learn step by step how to craft a painting by exploring techniques for paint application, brushstrokes and composition to create form and space.
While the focus is on painting from direct observation, such as from a still-life, there are still opportunities to explore individual style and personal expression. We will look to examples from both art history and contemporary art for technical and conceptual insights. A field trip to contemporary art galleries is a great opportunity to learn about Berlin's art scene and current trends in painting.

Non-toxic acrylic paint will be supplied.
August 7 - September 11, 2018
6x on Wednesday in the studio from 6-9 pm
1 x Field trip on Saturday, September 1, 12-2pm
Cost: 160€ (including paint)

New Workshops in August 2018

I am very excited to announce our August workshop schedule! We have three new workshops with three new artist instructors.

Dive deep into the subject matter of water with artist and expert scuba diver Klara Hobza! The Drawing Water Workshop will explore the challenging task of drawing water in motion, using both traditional and experimental techniques. Klara is an internationally recognized artist and she will be sharing her technical tips and passion for water with the class.

Expand and hybridize your understanding of what paper can be! Artist Loren Britton has focused their own artistic practice around paper-making, reinventing this traditional medium in both conceptual and sculptural forms. The Paper-making Workshop with Loren promises to be stimulating and fun, in both expected and unexpected ways.

And finally the workshop that many of you have been waiting for.. We are very excited to offer the Painting Workshop with internationally acclaimed painter Maureen Jeram. Maureen combines her training in Italian Renaissance painting with her studies under George Baselitz to give you an entirely fresh approach to traditional painting techniques.

It is a great honor to introduce you to Klara, Loren and Maureen. Check our TEAM page to learn more about these incredible artists and find links to their homepages.

Pulling from histories of collective making we will explore the materiality of paper together. Learning from artist, Loren Britton, who uses this process in their own work, we will process, pulp, practice, and produce pulp works that embed bits of our own and collective history into a new object.

Linocut: The Underdog of Printmaking

There are a lot of ways to make a print. Some people are seduced by the glossy speed of pulling an ink-charged squeegee across a silkscreen. Others prefer tooling away at sheets of copper destined for an acid bath. I, for one, have always been a sucker for the linocut.

Bold, graphic, and immediate, linocut is the underdog of the printmaking world. First used extensively by the German Expressionist group Die Brücke in the early 20th century, this utilitarian technique quickly became a popular and widespread practice with artists and designers.

Linoleum was cheap, easy to find, and easier to carve. It was initially unrecognized as a refined method of print production—and all the better. Without the burdens of history and style, artists could whittle whatever they wanted out of the smooth, industrially-produced surfaces, from ex libris bookplates to posters advertising political dissent.

In time, linocut was championed by the likes of Picasso and Matisse, who contributed wonderful additions (or should we editions) to this burgeoning art form. However, it always retained its status as an everyday way to publish texts and artist’s books, produce bespoke fabric patterns, and experiment with visualizing one's ideas.

Below I’ve included some reproductions of linocut prints made by the Polish artist Karol Hiller and others by Josef Čapek, the Czech painter, poet, and inventor of the word “robot.” I find these works especially compelling for their linear clarity and dynamic compositions. Although most are printed with a single layer of ink, like black, red, or blue, the last one has been augmented with hand-coloring to brighten the image.

Here at the Berlin Drawing Room, we are excited to tap into the unique, creative energy offered by linocut with our inaugural printmaking workshop solely dedicated to the technique. It is perfect for beginners and for print enthusiasts alike. You can find more information by following this link to the Berlin Drawing Room's workshop website:

I hope you enjoy the images.

All the best,

Patrick

Berlin inspired Collage Workshop

We had such an amazing time hosting this group of students from London while they were exploring Berlin and making art. We designed a unique workshop for the students to channel their experience of the city into mixed media artworks.

Accordion Sketchbooks

These accordion sketchbooks were made in the recent Watercolor Accordion Book Workshop with Giulia Caruso.

Make your own sketch book and learn watercolor techniques in this workshop led by artist Giulia Caruso. Giulia will guide the class with step by step demonstrations of each new technique!
Learning to sketch is like learning a new language: a form of perception and ability to communicate. Shapes and colors tell the story of a place and we will focus on the quickest, most efficient ways to transcribe these fleeting experiences.
Choosing the best tools when sketching on location is essential for scenarios where space and time are limited. We will learn how to use watercolor with a “water-brush” and how to mix it with pens and graphite.
We will make a Japanese style accordion sketchbook with watercolor paper, to be used for the field trip and life drawing session.

Photo Transfer Video Demonstration

Photo Transfer Salon

with Keegan Luttrell
Join us for an evening of art making in a laid back studio setting. Photo transfer is an accessible mixed media technique that can produce beautiful and layered results when combined with watercolor or acrylic paint. Using a non-toxic solvent, Keegan will guide the class step by step through the image transfer technique. Each student will have a unique image that can then be painted over to create a finished work.
All materials are included, however you are welcome to bring your own xerox images. We will start off with a complementary glass of Prosecco to get the creative juices flowing!
Upcoming Dates:
Thursday, July 27, 7-10pm
Thursday, August 10, 7-10pm
Cost: 43 Euro (includes all materials and a glass of Prosecco)
